Experience the best of what the Mississippi Delta has to offer
The Delta Hot Tamale is perhaps the biggest culinary contribution to come from the area. The 2013 Delta Hot Tamale Festival is gearing up to pay homage to this Delta delicacy and its “hot” history. This event will promote the heritage of the Delta Hot Tamale and the people who make and enjoy them. The Festival will help spread the word about this delicious food found here in the Delta and teach visitors about the rich history of the area where the hot tamale reigns supreme.
Bring your appetite and your lawn chairs (and guitars)!
Food and music has always had a way of bringing the people of the Delta together, and the 2013 Delta Hot Tamale Festival will put both front-and-center as we celebrate our history. Country music star and Greenville native Steve Azar has played a lead role in organizing the music for the festival. He will be performing, and has invited some of his singer-songwriter friends from Nashville and across the nation to join him in the fun! So far, we have confirmed that Emerson Hart, Walt Wilkins, and Dave Hardin will be at our inaugural festival, along with several fantastic local artists. For more information about Steve, Emerson, Walt, and Dave, please click the "Featured Musicians" link above. Our local artists are listed on the "Local Musicians" page.
This WON'T just be your average festival with a single music stage. While there will be a main stage with a scheduled lineup (coming soon), there will also be two separate music circles, where you'll have a chance to play along with performers as they come through (bring an acoustic guitar!). The circles will be free-form, with artists filtering in and out of them throughout the day.
Our cooking contest is named in memory of the late Frank Carlton, who organized the first “Championship Hot Tamale Contest” in Greenville. The contest is divided into the "Professional" and "Home Cook" divisions, with awards for the top competitor in each division. The contest will take place at 10:00 AM. After the contest has concluded, our tamale vendors will start selling to the public!
We will also have a Hot Tamale Eating Contest, with prizes awarded - if you'd like to enter, go to the contests/vendor info page. Hank Burdine will be our story teller of the Delta Hot Tamale which will be a treat in itself! Kim Guthrie was our artist for the logo, which features “The Mississippi Delta Hot Tamale Trail” including our neighboring States, and MacKenzie Stroh also helped us with graphic design and much more!
